Hit and Run

Colorado requires a driver who is responsible for property damage or bodily injury to stop, render aid if able, provide personal information, and produce a drivers license upon request. Leaving the scene of an accident, also known as a Hit and Run, can result in criminal charges. C.R.S. 42-4-1601 . If you are the victim of a collision, your best option is to ask the police to respond to the scene to manage the aftermath, including collection of all driver information, witness statements, and involvement of tow trucks and first responders. A police officer should be asked to create a report rather than simply facilitating an insurance exchange. A report will memorialize the crash and protect your rights. If the at-fault driver leaves the scene of an accident, you should inform the police and provide any identifying information you were able to collect, such as a description of the driver, a description of the vehicle, and license plate if possible.

For your own safety, do NOT attempt to detain the at-fault driver and do NOT chase after the at-fault driver.
